Additional Learning Needs

What Are Additional Learning Needs (ALN)?

At Goetre Community Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that every child has the support they need to achieve their full potential.

A child or young person has Additional Learning Needs (ALN) if they have a learning difficulty or disability that means they require additional support beyond the high-quality teaching and universal provision available to all learners.

A learner may have ALN if they:

• Find learning significantly more difficult than most children of the same age.

• Have a disability that makes it more difficult to access learning opportunities and facilities that are usually available in mainstream schools.

• Require support that is additional to, or different from, that provided for most learners.

Some learners may have ALN as a result of a diagnosed condition, disability, medical need or developmental difficulty. Others may require additional support without having a formal diagnosis.

It is important to note that a child is not considered to have ALN solely because English or Welsh is not their first language.

Every child is unique, and support is tailored to individual needs. At Goetre Community Primary School, we work closely with pupils, parents and carers, school staff and external agencies to identify needs early and provide appropriate support to help every learner thrive both academically and emotionally.

We believe that positive partnerships between home and school are key to ensuring that all children feel supported, valued and successful throughout their learning journey.
